you need a floppy disk lel

lole you fell for the linux threads
you understand those are all just an elaborate troll, right?
just use sudo pacman gubgub xorpxorp -d -v -w /path/to/the/thing -10 Im not home but when I get home can someon3 help me >>12799417
sudo pacpac gubgub i thought you just do it on steam when u download it i dont think its a linux problem i think you can deal with it from within steam gubgub xorp xorp -g %playgames%
>>12799417
Partition divides a drive into multiple sections.
Formatting aligns all the bits so it's blank and ready for data. Quick format just deletes the table pointing to the bits so it thinks it's all blank.
Mounting is telling the OS there is a partition and assigns a letter.
For example, one physical drive can have two formatted partitions C: and D: and an empty one. The empty part can be divided (partitioned) further or formatted and mounted as E: or say P: for "photos".

Interestingly A: and B: were reserved for floppy drives which is why we use C: for the hard drive. Computers didn't used to have hard drives.
>>12799424
When I try it on steam the only folder inside of my hard drive is a folder titled lost and found and it doesn't let me create a folder on it or direct steam game downloads to it
>>12799454
When it says I can mount it anywhere what exactly does that mean? Thats where im lost. In videos when they mount them by choosing a folder they always appear to mount them to the same drive they installed Linux to. Wouldn't that just take up space on the drive the os is installed to? What im trying to achieve is only having the os installed to my ssd and nothing else and I want to direct all of my installs (especially games) to my hard drive
>>12799469
You can use [sudo gparted] to see what drives are available to the OS and format and partition any drives you have. If the hard drive you want to use is listed in gparted but not showing up then you can try to mount it using [sudo mount /dev/sdX /mnt] and see if it shows up then, switching the X in sdX for whatever one gparted says your HDD is going by the volume size. If your HDD has a format like NTFS from windows you also have to make sure that it's not encrypted. My Windows 10 encrypted a drive on its own and it took hours to unencrypt it.
lsblk
just install

i fell for the linux meme. this was me a few weeks ago trying to set up the motherfucking clock because otherwise Anki (which I had to try installing like 10 times before it even opened) gave an error if my clock wasn't set up correctly. finally did it after like an hour.
the next day i couldn't connect to a network. my entire linux system was unable to connect to wifi and has been since for reasons unknown.
never trust anyone who tells you "go for an easy distro and you will be ok". just expect anything you do on linux to take at least 6 times more than it would on windows. be prepared to learn and learn fast, and be patient, so no strict schedules.
>>12799749
it can literally be faster and simpler than windows if youre not retarded lel

Your fortune: Better not tell you now

i know, its just a joke
linux is for people with all the time in the world to do "linux things" all day instead of actually being productive what do i do >>12802313
The /sda drive in the picture has a lock because it's the drive the OS is using. The first part /sda1 is fat32 to make the drive compatible with most BIOS. The ext4 partition of that drive is the meat and potatoes of the linux install. The unallocated bit at the end is just there sometimes, I usually just leave it if it's small. Those are all partitions of the first drive; the Samsung SSD is likely /sdb and the WDC might be /sdc. You'll see the name when you click on them.
>>12802362
the ssd has my os on it and im trying to make the one i selected the one i install games on. how do i do this the right way? i cant seem to figure this out
can we just agree preston is mid and move on? the exploit was patched in S2 three patches ago and u still acting like he’s someything viable >>12802490
you can try to just cancel and add the games folder through the steam app under
-Settings
-Storage
any drive I had access to appeared in the list on the left
i just had to see this thread before going to bed

if you're not able to navigate to the drives from steam it probably means they're not even mounted, are these external drives?

there's probably a graphical way to do it in your de but basically run the following commands and post the output in this thread and i'll help you after i wake up

sudo blkid

nano /etc/fstab/ (do not make any changes here, which you won't be able to do if you ran it without sudo)

if the drives are mounted, you should be able to see them in fstab, so just navigate to the path you see there in steam
>>12802942
they are external drives. they were visible from steam but arent anymore, i think i fucked all of my drives up from trying to mount the 500gb one myself. One of my hard drives were named 1TB and now its randomly named 1TB2 (at least when i try to save images from 4chan it is). Inside of my 500gb hard drive (the one im trying to mount and use for games) exists a folder named drive22, drive21, 1TB1, 1TB, drive 2, 1TB2 (this one has all of my 1TB drive inside of it for some odd reason) and the lost+found folder. None of this makes any sense. All I did was create a folder named drive2 that was supposed to be the location for the games. Also nothing seems to pop up. I definitely fucked everything up. PLEASE HELP ME PLEASE
I think i should keep my pc on for now, im afraid i might have fucked up big time >>12803010
if the 500GB drive is your OS drive then those are all partitions of the same drive, not seperate ones. /sda1 is the FAT32 boot partition /sda2 is your linux install. Different drives will be /sdb, /sdc etc. It looks like those are just folders on your /sda2 partition. If you can't see the other drives then it's the first problem you need to fix.
>>12803133
the os drive is my ssd, its the 2nd one in this image and the top one is the 500gb one
>>12803139
in this image >>12802313
>>12803142
Are you sure the linux isn't installed on the 500gb drive? The 500gb one is /sda and it's set up like a linux drive. Is it possible that a lot of your problems are from installing linux on the wrong drive?
I see what looks like the following drives, which was supposed to do what?
Seagate 500GB
Samsung 250GB
WD 1TB
>>12803159
yes im sure
>>12803160
-i want to put games on this one and misc stuff (nothing is currently happening on it aside from the mistake ive made that led to a bunch of folders being here)
-os is on this one
-4chan folders/misc is on this one
>>12802313
Can you open the partition manager again and click on the Samsung under Devices on the left and show what that one looks like? /sda is usually the first drive booted and mounted which is the Seagate one so having the OS on the Samsung would be really odd.
>>12803173 >>12803165
You need to automount you all your drives on boot. follow instructions on archwiki:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Fstab

If your distro has systemd, then you should follow the section on automount with systemd, otherwise you edit your fstab file.
>>12803181
ill read this now but automounting all of them wont fix the 500gb one i fucked up (i think)
also it seems both the 1tb and the 500gb ones are fucked up and one appears to be inside of the other one >>12803178
That drive also has a linux installation but it's not the one that's booting. Did you try to install linux more than once? Either way, the Seagate is sda so that's the linux you're booting into. If you disconnect the Samsung drive from your motherboard it will probably boot the same way it is now. If you turn it off and disconnect the Seagate one you might boot into the linux you wanted as long as the GRUB file allows it.
https://www.positioniseverything.net/what-is-sda-in-linux/
>>12803182
can you post the results of lsblk in the terminal?
>>12803187
thats weird. im pretty sure i selected the 250gb one when installing cachy, something mustve went wrong after, also the 500gb one appears to be empty. i completely fucked up the path when trying to manually mount it and thats why the path is /run/media/name
>>12803188 If you really want to solve the mystery I would turn off the pc and reboot without the samsung drive. It'll probably boot up the same way it is now. If the WD drive has anything important on it I would disconnect that one too until your situation is figured out. >>12803192
If you go to /run/media/blackedout do you see the files on your 500gb drive? Also, idk if this was explained or not, but mounting a drive doesn't take space on your drive. You're just marking a directory as a portal to that drive.
In steam settings under storage, can't you just select add drive and add the folder /run/media/blackedout? Cuz it looks like it's already mounted >>12803198
how do i find that path specifically? i think it would just this but im not entirely sure
>>12803208
yea that's it probably. So just select that folder when you click add drive under storage in steam settings and you should be able to install games there.
>>12803215
there is clearly a big issue here that needs to be fixed, adding video games anywhere is on hold for now
>>12803216
If you're talking about the empty folders, that's because you mounted your other drives there. They won't interfere with steam because steam will create a new folder anyway, but you can just unmount them and mount them somewhere like in /run/media/sdc3 or whatever. And you don't need to mount sdc1. In fact I don't understand why you have 3 partitions if that drive is just for file storage.
>>12803221
the run/media thing wasnt intentional, i want to mount them to normal locations. i want to use both hard drives for games/files and the ssd for the os just to better organize things. i need to fix this
>>12803225
standard location to mount internal drives is /media
just don't mount the other drive on a subdirectory of the drive you already mounted.
im never going to figure this out >>12803256
Delete those extra empty folders
Unmount the drives
And then follow a tutorial for automounting the drives on boot (they should give you a good default mount directory)
Where are you having a problem?

I don't mean to nag but I still think the drives you're using aren't the ones you think they are. I'm honestly only modestly familiar with linux after using it for years. The one thing I am familiar with though is fucking shit up and the frustration that comes along with trying to fix them. If you're not balls-deep I might suggest just nuking it and starting over. If you want to fix it I would do the following.
1. Boot into your BIOS and make absolutely sure the Samsung drive is the first booted.
2. Reboot and see which drive boots. If you check the partition manager the Samsung should be /sda and be on the top now.
3. While in the partition manager delete every partition from the Seagate 500GB drive and reformat the entire thing as ext4 if you're only going to use it with linux or ntfs if you might need to read it on windows later.
4.Reboot again and pray that everything works right, the 500GB Seagate and 1TB WD drive should show up on the desktop and need to be clicked on to be mounted.
5.Try installing your Steam games again and hope for a little more luck to put the games where you want.
I'd like to help more but you do seem pretty stuck. I've been there so good luck!
>>12803262
theyre all locked, i can't delete them even if i wanted to. also 1TB2 IS the extra folder and its the only one it lets me use for the 1tb hard drive, also i dont know what im doing. i have never done this, i dont understand what im actually supposed to do based on what im reading here
>>12803269
You need to use the terminal and sudo rm to remove the locked empty folders. To unmount a folder, you should be able to right click the drive in the left bar and unmount. Otherwise, you'll need to use sudo umount in the terminal. If you need specifics, google the keyword you have trouble with.

From what I can see in this thread you need to:
Delete those extra empty folders
Unmount the drives
Automount the drives on boot
Add the drive you want steam games on

Also, KDE will show the drive name in the file explorer instead of the path where it's actually mounted in, but its the same folder.

Your sda and sdc drives seem to have more partitions than they need, but you could delete those partitions later if you want.
>>12803274
the 500gb one was mounted incorrectly, this is what shows on steam
>>12803277
you selected the wrong folder
the 500gb is /run/media/blackedout not /run/media/blackout/drive22
>>12803277
>>12803282
and the reason drive22 has no space is because for some reason you mounted a partition of the WD drive that has only 1MB inside your mount point for the 500GB one
>>12803282
how do i find that? where is /run/ and where is /media/
nevermind, i found it but it doesnt let me use it anyways >>12803288
When you set the folder a file explorer window pops up right? Click in the file path bar in the top and type /run/media/blackedout and hit enter.
If that doesn't work check the menu for something where you can enter the path of the folder.
>>12803290
Does it show an error message? What happens when you tried?
If you installed the flatpak of steam it's probably some permissions thing where you need to "whitelist the path to the drive in flatseal" >>12803296
when i click let me choose another location in steam, i find the path (picrel) then i click and it appears to do nothing and go back to the screen where it asks me to choose another location

i do have the flakpak version,
>>12803304
you could try the stuff in this leddit thread:

thanks for the help, i have to sleep so ill save this video i found for later that ill follow instead of using the wiki because i didnt understand it, then ill do everything else https://youtu.be/HnRsel0-Qzc?si=dP3LKv6ydIAlu--a >>12803319
Good night and good luck
If you're here tomorrow, what distro are you using?

>>12802942
ok, i woke up
you're getting some really weird advice here from people who i feel do not really understand what the issue is, and following some of their instructions you could end up wiping your entire drives if you do things the wrong way

your issue is that most likely your external drives are formatted as ntfs
linux will auto mount these as root, and as a normal user you will have only view access only (hence the lock)

you need to do this

first, create mount point folders inside your home directory for each drive, you can name them whatever e.g. drive1, drive2 (this not strictly necessary, but it will make things easier to understand and will take care of any flatpak permission issues that might pop up later)

then run in terminal:
sudo blkid

note down the UUID values of drives/partitions you need to mount, double check that they're indeed ntfs (this will show up as type=ntfs)

backup your fstab file by copying it somewhere else e.g. this will copy it to your home director, check using file explorer if the file is actually there just to be sure:

cp /etc/fstab ~/

you will possibly need a special driver installed called beforehand called ntfs-3g, post your distro and i will tell you what command to execute

now you will need edit fstab file, run following command in terminal

sudo nano /etc/fstab

for each drive, add the followng lines, each seperate line

UUID=driveuidhere /pathto/folderyou/createdearlier ntfs-3g defaults,nls=utf8,umask=000,dmask=027,fmask=137,uid=1000,gid=1000,windows_names 0 0

press ctrl + o to save changes in nano, press ctrl + x to exit out nano

then run this command

sudo mount -a

if it completes without errors you should go to the folders where you mounted the drives and there shouldn't be any locks anymore and you should be able to to view and add files there and then you can add the folders to steam or whatever
>>12803428
He showed one drive thats ext4 and his linux install is btrfs and the last drive he says he can browse it and you can see thumbnails in the file explorer inside it. I'm pretty sure he's having a permissions issue with flatpak steam, aside from wanting to mount in a different location for organization.
install cirnOS

Your fortune: ( ´_ゝ`)フーン
>>12803469
if steam's flatpak does not have rw permissions to the folder it simply won't show up when he browses for it from steam, however the fact that he's getting locks in his file explorer regardless of what filesystem they are means the drives are mounted either as root or rw for his user and the best thing would still be to give these drives mount points in fstab using the instructions i've provided instead of relying on them being automounted, he'll just need to change the options
reading this thread every time i think about using linux ever again >>12803676
it's honestly not that bad, although i do recall auto-mounting behavior of external drives can be a bit finick, but i think it was always because the drives were formatted as ntfs in my case

and if that turns out to be the the case here the reverse of this situation on windows would actually be even worse because windows wouldn't even detect ext4 partitions/drives let alone mount them as read only so i don't think that would be a valid criticism here

windows is getting shittier by the update and i heard you can't even do an OS install without registering an account nowadays

>>12803428
if you read the thread carefully and understand what he wants then it's not that complicated. he has 3 drives:
1:is the Seagate 500gb he wants to use as storage. It's mounted as /sda and is formatted as ext4 with a fat32 bios partition at the beginning.
2.is a Samsung 250gb ssd he thinks his linux is running from. It's mounted as /sdb and formatted as btrfs and also has a fat32 bios partition.
3.is the WD 1tb drive he wants as a different storage. It's mounted as /sdc but doesn't matter to any problems because he can access it any ways.
Now here is his problem he won't fix.
The [1.Seagate 500gb ext4] is /sda and is running the OS he's using. He insists the [2.Samsung 250gb btrfs] has the OS even though it's mounted as /sdb. There are 2 linux installations The one that boots first is always /sda. A car has one driver's seat so only one person can drive even if there's more than one driver in the car. The /sda is the driver's seat and the Seagate 500gb is driving.
>>12804108
uh, things like sda, sdb are block identifiers, they're not a mount points

>The one that boots first is always /sda
that's incorrect, it's merely the first drive to be detected by the OS, you can install your system on whatever drive you want

you can clearly see in his screencaps that the root is mounted on sdb so what he is saying is correct

OP literally just needs to mount his drives with rw permission like i already said and that's it
>>12804157
Look again under devices. The 500gb says 'Internal Drive'. The 'root' is the fat32 partition of the Samsung drive. The 'drive2' is the btrfs OS partition of the Samsung drive. The third device is the 1tb drive which is like I said irrelevant. Take my advice with a grain of salt if you don't believe me, I'm glad I don't get tech support from /s4s/.
